Dilution & Water

Water changes more than strength. It shifts which aroma compounds reach the air and which flavors dominate—but more water is not always better.

💧Useful starting point: test water in measured additions and stop before roughly one part water to four parts whiskey. Beyond that point, trained tasters struggled to distinguish individual whiskies.

What dilution actually changes

A study of 25 whiskies found that dilution reduced the headspace concentration of more water-loving compounds while increasing some more hydrophobic compounds. The sensory profile changed with it; “opening up” is not a universal increase in aroma.

The same work found that samples became less distinguishable beyond an 80/20 whiskey-to-water mix—about 7.5 mL of water in a 30 mL pour.

Does the water type matter?

In trained-panel testing, spring, distilled, and limestone water did not produce a significant sensory difference in proofed spirits. Clean, neutral-tasting water matters more than a premium origin story.

Try this: prepare three identical pours, leave one neat, and add two measured amounts of water. Taste blind after the glasses reach the same temperature.
