Light and heat are the clearest enemies. Headspace matters mainly when a bottle gets low; preservation gadgets have not earned the confidence placed in them.
What matters most
A year-long blind comparison of 27 storage methods found the largest deterioration under indirect sunlight. Moderate headspace in cool, dark storage produced a smaller difference; extreme headspace mattered more.
The same dataset found no benefit from argon spray or vacuum stoppers. Because this was a careful citizen-science study rather than peer-reviewed research, treat the gadget result as useful but provisional.
Does whiskey keep aging in the bottle?
Bottle chemistry can change slowly, but that is not barrel maturation. Four-year measurements found no change in alcoholic strength and did find changes in several acids and wood-derived compounds. Vanillin did not significantly decline.
For everyday storage, skip marbles, sprays, and pumps. Reduce light and heat first; reduce headspace only when the bottle becomes both valuable and low.
